An Experimental Investigation on the Pancake Problem

چکیده
In this paper, we present an experimental investigation on the pancake problem. Also called sorting by prefix reversals (SBPR), this problem is linked to the genome rearrangement problem also called sorting by reversals (SBR). The pancake problem is a NP-hard problem. Until now, the best theoretical R-approximation was 2 with an algorithm which gives a 1.22 experimental R-approximation on stacks with a size inferior to 70. In the current work, we used a Monte-Carlo Search (MCS) approach with nested levels and specific domaindependent simulations. First, in order to sort large stacks of pancakes, we show that MCS is a relevant alternative to Iterative Deepening Depth First Search (IDDFS). Secondly, at a given level and with a given number of polynomial-time domain-dependent simulations, MCS is a polynomial-time algorithm as well. We observed that MCS at level 3 or 4 gives a 1.04 experimental approximation, which is a breakthrough. With a low nested level, our MCS solver solves stacks of size 512 with an experimental R-approximation value of 1.20.

This paper presents an experimental investigation of the Sounds of Silence (SoS) harmony search metaheuristic for the multi-mode resource-constrained project scheduling problem (MRCPSP) using a pre-optimized starting repertoire. The presented algorithm is based on the time oriented version of the SoS harmony search metaheuristic developed by Csébfalvi et al. [1] for the single-mode resource-con...
متن کاملPancake kidney: An unusual type of renal fusion anomaly found in 99mTc-DMSA renal scintigraphy
A 2.5-year-old boy with a history of the previous incidental finding of an ectopic kidney in ultrasonography was referred to our nuclear medicine center for 99mTc-DMSA renal scintigraphy. The scan showed an unusual type of ectopic fused kidneys on the right side of the lower abdomen. In this anomaly, kidneys were fused completely across the medial portion of both upper and lower pole...
متن کاملProblem Difficulty and the Phase Transition in Heuristic Search
In the recent years, there has been significant work on the difficulty of heuristic search problems, identifying different problem instance characteristics that can have a significant impact on search effort. Phase transitions in the solubility of random problem instances have proved useful in the study of problem difficulty for other classes of computational problems, notably SAT and CSP, and ...
متن کاملMinimizing Disk I/O in Two-Bit Breadth-First Search
We present a breadth-first search algorithm, two-bit breadthfirst search (TBBFS), which requires only two bits for each state in the problem space. TBBFS can be parallelized in several ways, and can store its data on magnetic disk. Using TBBFS, we perform complete breadth-first searches of the original pancake problem with 14 and 15 pancakes, and the burned pancake problem with 11 and 12 pancak...
